American Psycho: The Musical
Playing now through September 14 at the Hobby Center (Zilkha Hall)

Houston Broadway Theatre is back with its second production, and this time they’re bringing the regional premiere of American Psycho: The Musical to the intimate Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center.

The story follows Patrick Bateman, a young professional who appears to have it all: money, good looks, and the right friends. But beneath his flawless designer suits lurks a darkness that consumes his nights. The musical, with book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and music and lyrics by Tony Award–winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening), leans into that duality by fusing satire with pop-infused music.

To be fully transparent, the film American Psycho wasn’t a staple for me growing up. In fact, I watched the film for the first time only last month to prepare for this musical. I gave the movie a B-, finding that its over-the-top humor diluted some of the tension. Still, it had enough bizarre and unforgettable moments to leave an impression.

The musical, however, worked better for me. Clocking in at 2 hours and 40 minutes (with one intermission), the pacing flows surprisingly well. The music bolsters the story, making scenes more engaging and entertaining. Many numbers are catchy, and even when they’re not, they’re short enough to keep momentum moving. Overall, I preferred the musical to the movie; it earns a solid B grade from me.

Production-wise, Houston Broadway Theatre continues to impress after last year’s Next to Normal. The design is ambitious for a smaller hall: two levels of staging with the band tucked away behind a curtain on the second floor, LED light boxes, and vibrant screens that energize the story. The cast is uniformly attractive and confident, unafraid to embrace the show’s provocative edge. The opening scene alone, featuring the ensemble in lingerie and underwear, sets the bold tone.

This isn’t a story with a likable protagonist; Patrick Bateman is intentionally cold and unrelatable, but that’s the point. You’re stepping inside the warped mind of a narcissist and watching how he justifies his increasingly violent actions.

American Psycho: The Musical won’t win over those who disliked the book or movie, but if you’re already a fan, this adaptation will absolutely deliver.
